Love Me Slender: How Smart Couples Team Up to Lose Weight, Exercise More, and Stay Healthy Together

Based on cutting-edge research with more than 1,000 married couples, this “revolutionary book” (Harville Hendrix, PhD, coauthor of Making Marriage Simple) shows you how to bolster your resolve by strengthening your relationship, offering a fresh approach to weight loss that will turn your spouse from diet saboteur into your most loyal health ally.

First comes love, then comes marriage…then comes a larger pant size? Many couples find themselves gaining weight as they settle into a relationship, but some couples manage to buck this trend. They exercise (together or separately), they support each other’s healthy eating habits, and their relationships are stronger as a result. What are their secrets?

It turns out that many of us are ignoring the most powerful tool we have to help us get healthier and stay healthier—our spouse or significant other. For more than twenty years, Drs. Thomas Bradbury and Benjamin Karney, codirectors of the Relationship Institute at UCLA, have been studying how couples communicate around these issues, witnessing firsthand how partners can help (and hinder) one another’s progress toward better health. In Love Me Slender, they identify the specific principles that successful couples use in their quest to improve their health.

Love Me Slender offers new solutions based on a remarkable insight: The powerful connection we share with our mate can influence what we eat, how much we exercise, how well we age, and ultimately how long we live. Strengthening this connection, and using it to influence our daily habits, holds the key to better health.

Featuring self-assessments and case studies from real couples working to stay healthy together, Love Me Slender is an eye-opening, uplifting guide to changing the dynamic of your relationship and improving your health—and the health of those you love most.

Better communication, better couple, healthier lifestyle, May 4, 2014

Great book for couples or anyone in a relationship looking to lose weight. The ideas in the book are based on the authors’ research of a variety of couples where one or both partners are trying to lose weight or live a healthier lifestyle. The focus is on effective communication: how to effectively encourage your partner and/or how to include your partner as a support in your weight loss journey. Through examples of conversations between the couples researched, the authors point out the pitfalls in their conversations and give suggestions on how both sides of the discussion could have been more supportive or effective.

A clear understanding of how couples affect each other’s health., March 28, 2014
    By

This book is great even for people who don’t have time to read! The chapter summaries, conveniently italicized headlines throughout, and short chapter structure make it the kind of book a couple could page through together while in the kitchen making meals. But that isn’t to take away from its in-depth analysis and content… this book makes great reading for people who just have not yet been able to solve what’s keeping them from their weight-loss/management goals. It will open your eyes to how your partner is affecting you, your diet, and your exercise regimen. Like so many things, we take for granted the control we think we have over ourselves, only to realize that we’re more likely to be influenced than we imagined. This is an easy book to read, it will help you talk together about your goals, and it will bring some spark to what is probably coming up as a “problem” between you.

“I like the before picture.” My wife is a “charmer” Now I understand what she meant., February 23, 2014
    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I just finished this timely book on how your relationship can help or hinder your attempt to lose weight and it explained many years of conversations we have had and why it is so darn hard to get on the same page – what the authors call mutual understanding – with your partner regarding healthy eating and exercise. The documented conversations from their lab at times made me laugh – been there said that – and at times surprised me. Discussions between partners, as depicted in the book, have a lot more to them than appears on the surface. Demystifying the conversations with simple labels like “the charmer” e.g., my wife is so supportive that in the recent “fitness challenge” I undertook, she said she liked the “before” picture. But I don’t think I wanted the criticism either. My biggest takeaway will be listening more carefully and using the concept of mutual understanding to gain positive mutual influence. Thank you professors – you gave us homework.
